Samson's Super Stars, 2012-13
Our 3rd week of school is complete, and it was another busy one! (They will all be busy, because we are hard workers!)
This week, we started Spelling (and had our first Spelling test on Friday), and we continued to learn about counting and naming numbers all the way to 1,000 using place value. We did some more alphabetizing to the second letter, and we talked a lot about what and why writers write, what good writers do, and how writers come up with their ideas for topics to write about.
Every morning, we also do our Data Based Question (DBQ) writing--children are shown a picture and we write about it. We write about what we notice, what we think is happening, facts we can see, and we make text-to-self connections. We follow our DBQ writing with Mentor Text lessons--we look at a sentence and talk about how the writer crafted it, the different parts of the sentence, and how we can write our own excellent sentence based on what the Mentor Text has taught us.
I really enjoyed getting to talk to those of you who came for Curriculum Night! I meant to post a link to the powerpoint the 2nd grade teachers shared, along with one I made myself...but I forgot to bring my work computer home! I will post one on Monday!
Don't forget: dress comfy on Monday. We are having a practice School Evacuation drill! K-2 students will be evacuating Meadowcreek and practicing how to walk to Greater Atlanta Christian School. It's always good to be prepared!
I've taken some class pictures and placed them in our Pictures section. Be sure to check out how hard we've been working (there may be some cool and silly pictures in there, too!).
Our Specials for this coming week are:
Monday--Art
Tuesday--PE
Wednesday--Math
Thursday--Music
Friday-Science
Our Spelling list for this week focuses on -r controlled "i" words, academic vocabulary, and sight words. Visit the HOMEWORK page for a list of home activities your child can practice each week before Friday's test.
